British number one Emma Raducanu swapped the tennis court for the race track at Brands Hatch recently, as the 20-year-old got behind the wheel of a Porsche 911 GT3 car at the Kent circuit.
The 2021 US Open champion, who grew up as a Brands Hatch local, is no stranger to the track, having visited on several occasions as a youngster and was present at both British Touring Car Championship events at the venue in 2022.
Her most recent visit however, saw her exchange her racquet for a steering wheel, as she got to grips with the 911 machine capable of almost 200mph.
"As Brands Hatch is my local track, I visited with my dad many times when I was younger and always enjoyed watching the races," she said. "It was great to see behind the scenes at the Carrera Cup GB earlier this year, but even then, I only saw the racing from the grandstands. So it was exciting to lap the circuit at speed today, and a real treat to try the 911 GT3.
"I loved driving the 911 GT3, it was so much fun to drive, and I learned a lot about the testing and practice that helps build the skills of a champion driver. It was amazing to add to my memories of being a spectator here and now be driving myself. I much prefer being this side of the fence!"
She was paired with Porsche Carrera Cup GB Junior driver Adam Smalley for the experience, who finished second overall in the championship in 2022, with 10 podium finishes, three of those coming at the Kent circuit.
"It was great to have Adam here with me, that was definitely the best way to understand the circuit and get to know the 911 GT3 in detail. It was rewarding to find the ultimate balance between throttle and brake, as I explored the potential of the car," she added. "As my confidence and commitment grew, the racing lines started to flow together so I could maintain speed through the corners."
"Driving at Brands Hatch is another highlight of my year. It has been interesting to meet drivers like Adam, and Mark [Webber] in the summer, and learn how their human performance and preparation is adapted to the track versus mine on the tennis court."
