Tom Chilton will remain in the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship this year, with confirmation coming this morning that the experienced racer will contest the season with EXCELR8 Motorsport.

The 36-year-old will join Tom Ingram and Dan Lloyd in the line-up of Hyundai i30 Fastback N machines, with the Suffolk-based team hoping to fight for championship honours this year.

For Chilton, this is the latest step in a long BTCC career, which saw him debut in the series aged just 17 in 2002 and claim a podium finish in just his first ever race. After that, Chilton enjoyed stints as a works driver for Honda and Vauxhall before switching to the world stage.

Chilton has been a race-winner since returning to the BTCC grid in 2018, and will be hoping to put his years of experience to good use as he takes on a new challenge with EXCELR8.

After a planned pre-season testing programme, Chilton's debut in EXCELR8 colours will come at Donington Park on 23/24 April when the season kicks off in the East Midlands.

Chilton said: "I'm massively excited to announce this deal with EXCELR8 for 2022, and I'm going back to what I know with a front-wheel drive touring car. I'm particularly looking forward to working with Tom as I feel he is a quick driver who has a similar driving style to me and with our experience, and the speed that Dan has also shown in the past, I believe we already have one of the strongest line-ups on the grid.

"Having won an Independents' title and been in the top three overall in the past, I really want to challenge for the overall title, and my full focus is on trying to achieve that goal with EXCELR8 this season. Roll on the opening rounds!"
