Aiden Moffat won the final British Touring Car Championship qualifying race of the season at Brands Hatch to secure pole position for Sunday's finale. The Scotsman led every lap from pole in his Power Maxed Racing Audi A3, having already topped the earlier timed qualifying session.
Moffat made a clean getaway to lead the pack into Paddock Hill Bend. Josh Cook's Speedworks Toyota briefly held second before sliding wide at Druids. That let Ricky Collard, back in one of Excelr8 Motorsport's Hyundais this weekend, move into second. He was soon passed by team-mate Tom Ingram as the field reached the Grand Prix loop.
Moffat led Ingram and Collard at the end of lap one, with Cook recovering to fourth. Newly crowned five-time champion Ash Sutton ran fifth, his Alliance Racing Ford Focus Titanium using the minimum available TOCA Turbo Boost, with Mikey Doble close behind for the opening half of the race.
Collard's spell in the top three ended when he ran wide at the dip after Paddock Hill Bend, dropping to sixth behind Sutton and Doble’s Audi. Doble, who had pressured Sutton for several laps, passed him for fourth with a bold move into Hawthorn on lap six.
Collard then closed on Sutton and attempted a switchback at the exit of Hawthorn a lap later. Sutton reclaimed the place by Westfield, but the move was undone when he was handed a five-second penalty for a track-limits infringement on lap eight, dropping him outside the top 10 with cars queued behind.
At the front, Moffat controlled the race to the flag despite late pressure from Ingram and Cook. Cook attacked Ingram for second on the final lap but had to settle for third, while Doble finished a lonely fourth after pulling clear of Sutton.
Sutton crossed the line fifth on the road but was classified 11th after his penalty, promoting Collard to fifth on his return meeting.
Daryl De Leon's WSR BMW finished sixth after a close fight in the lower top 10, one place ahead of Daniel Rowbottom's leading CPRL Mercedes. Aron Taylor-Smith and Dexter Patterson followed, with Dan Cammish classified 10th, one place ahead of team-mate Sutton.
