Local racer Rod Birley could achieve a historic 300th Brands Hatch victory this weekend during the CMMC Super Saloons & Production Saloons races, following an extraordinary career in which he’s scored more race wins than any other British driver.

Birley will once again aim for silverware behind the wheel of his trusted Ford Escort WRC Cosworth, an appropriate machine considering the majority of his success has come behind the wheel of blue oval badged cars.

Having already amassed more than 760 race wins in his career, surpassing Gerry Marshall’s previous record of 625 wins in 2017, Birley now looks to make history at the Kent venue during its historic centenary season.

A 300th win at Brands Hatch would be a crowning achievement in a career that began back in 1973, with Birley often citing witnessing Jim Clark coming around Clearways on two wheels in a Lotus Cortina as the trigger for him to start racing.

During this weekend’s Easter Truck Racing meeting at Brands Hatch, Birley has two chances to earn his triple century of victories, with the first CMMC race scheduled for 12.20 on Sunday (5 April), followed by a second contest at 16.55.

Birley said: “I am really looking forward to racing at Brands Hatch this weekend. Over the years it has been my most successful circuit, but I never underestimate the opposition.

“I have been campaigning the Escort Cosworth since 1999 and it has been the backbone to most of my wins here. Despite a heavy crash back in 2017, the car has survived and continued to win races. I must say a big thank you to everyone who has helped me towards this milestone.”
