Nelson Piquet Jr returned to the Brands Hatch podium this weekend, 21 years on from his landmark double victory in the inaugural A1GP races at the venue in 2005. The Brazilian’s trip to the rostrum came during the first of two NASCAR Euro Series V8GP races at American SpeedFest on Saturday.

The result came in a tricky opening contest of the weekend, run in wet conditions which made even staying on the circuit difficult at times. But in just his third event as a NASCAR Euro Series driver, the former Formula 1 racer kept his car between the white lines and avoided the trouble which hit others to score a second place.

He was beaten only by Vittorio Ghirelli, a series regular, and winner of the two previous titles in the NASCAR Euro Series’ premier class. Piquet was classified ahead of British driver Jack Davidson after the latter picked up a penalty, despite running further up the road. Click here for the full race report.

Piquet’s appearance at the Kent circuit appropriately comes during the venue’s centenary season. And, as the winner of those landmark A1GP races more than two decades ago, he’s forever etched into the Brands Hatch history books.

Piquet Jr returns to NASCAR action at the wheel of his #48 Ford Mustang today (Sunday).
