Paul Jouffreau surged to Sunday success in the second NASCAR Euro Series V8GP race of the weekend this afternoon. The Frenchman rebounded to Victory Lane, after his Saturday challenge from the front row ended with a detour through the gravel trap and a slide down the order.
This time, Jouffreau made a strong start from pole position to lead early on. And, with British contender Jack Davidson unable to match his pace from second on the grid, Jouffreau was able to make an early break away. Davidson, meanwhile, bottled the pack up behind him.
Gianmarco Ercoli, who’d won on the road on Saturday before losing his victory to a penalty, was hard on the Brit’s case, and eventually worked his way by before setting after Jouffreau. Nelson Piquet Jr, who’d started fourth and initially been part of the lead group, exited contention after suffering a puncture during the opening stages.
Ercoli’s charge after Jouffreau came to a climax midway through the race when the Italian sized up a move into Druids and resisted the attempted cutback. And from there, it seemed as though Ercoli’s move would be the decisive one. Or so it seemed, until his car crawled to a halt with only moments to go.
That put Jouffreau out front, and allowed the Ford Mustang racer to cross the line first. By the time the race came to an end, Davidson was out of the picture, having struggled for pace all day. So it was American Jordan O’Brien who claimed the second spot on the rostrum, one place ahead of Saturday Open class winner Martin Doubek.
Saturday’s V8GP victor, Vittorio Ghirelli, was another to produce a strong result, winding up fourth. Thomas Krasonis completed the top-five, just ahead of Vladimiros Tziortzis and Marc Goossens. Behind that, Vinnie Meskelis, Logan Bearden and Julian Rehberg rounded out the top 10.
