Dan Cammish won the first race of the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship finale weekend at Brands Hatch, whilst Tom Ingram extended his standings lead over Ash Sutton this morning (Sunday).
There was drama immediately as pole-sitter Daryl DeLeon was forced to pit with an issue at the end of the warm up lap in his BMW. This left Cammish as the de facto pole-sitter, albeit from the outside of the grid. The NAPA Racing UK driver made the most of the opportunity he’d been granted to take the lead at the start however.
Behind Cammish, Tom Chilton rocketed past Daniel Rowbottom to take second, but Rowbottom fought back to sit behind the sister Ford Focus ST ahead as they exited Druids. Further back, there was more misfortune for the BMWs with Jake Hill suffering a tyre issue at Hawthorn. This left Cammish leading from Rowbottom and Chilton with Adam Morgan and Ingram completing the top-five at the end of lap one.
Cammish was able to control the race sensibly from there, rarely looking troubled despite never possessing a massive lead over those behind. The fight behind was a little more lively however, with both Chilton and Morgan passing Rowbottom in the opening laps before the charging Charles Rainford entered the picture in his BMW.
Rainford passed Ingram on lap two, and Morgan the next time around before sizing up Chilton for much of the remaining distance. This culminated in an attempted pass on lap 11, but Morgan ended up opportunistically getting back past instead to secure a double podium for the Team VERTU Hyundais.
With Rainford being forced to settle for fourth, Ingram crossed the line in fifth, four places ahead of his only title rival Ash Sutton. This means he goes into the final two races of the season with a margin of 37 points with just 44 on the table. Rowbottom, Gordon Shedden and Daniel Lloyd were the three drivers who crossed the line between the main protagonists, with Chris Smiley completing the top-10 behind that.
