Jason Smyth added his name to the Formula Ford Festival’s illustrious list of winners by claiming victory in the Grand Final on the Brands Hatch Indy circuit this afternoon. Smyth started from pole position in his Van Diemen and led every lap to claim the prestigious prize.
Smyth held the lead from the off and crossed the start/finish line at the head of the order on each of the race’s 25 laps, with the race running slightly longer following a series of safety car interruptions. But Smyth negotiated all of the challenges well to get the job done.
Jordan Dempsey produced a strong launch from third on the grid to jump past Tom Nippers in the other of the front row starting cars. Dempsey then ran as Smyth’s nearest challenger for the duration but wasn’t able to find a way to defeat his rival.
Two-time previous winner Niall Murray ran a little wide on the opening lap, dropping from sixth to seventh. But the Irishman offered an indication that without that early wobble, he could have been a challenger for one of the top-two spots, climbing back up the order to take third by the end.
Nippers meanwhile had to settle for fifth after losing a further place to yet another two-time Festival victor in Rory Smith. Behind that came Morgan Quinn and Luke Cooper in sixth and seventh. Alex Walker, Connor Willis and Ben Cochran completed the top-ten.
