Four-time British Touring Car Champion Colin Turkington will step into the past with a retro run out in two classic tin tops when Super Touring Power 3 arrives at Brands Hatch next month (28/29 June).
The saloon car racing legend will make his competitive debut in Super Touring era machinery on the Saturday, with an outing in Jason Hughes’ ex-Jason Plato Vauxhall Vectra. Turkington has raced through multiple eras of the BTCC, including at the wheel of BTC, S2000 and NGTC spec machinery, but this will be his first race outing in anything from the beloved Super Touring period.
The Northern Irishman will then switch to more familiar territory for Sunday, switching to an MG ZS, also owned by Hughes. For fans of the BTCC’s 2000s period, the sight of Turkington in an MG will transport them back to the earlier years of his long association with West Surrey Racing.
Hughes will be on reverse duty, piloting the MG on the Grand Prix circuit on Saturday before hopping back into the Vauxhall a day later.
Turkington, said: “This year is a perfect opportunity for me to attend Super Touring Power, and I’m really looking forward to being involved. I have never actually driven a Super Tourer, and Jason has very kindly offered me the drive. I will get the best of both worlds racing the Vectra on Saturday, and the MG on Sunday – a car I know very well having raced it over four seasons.
“I grew up glued to the TV watching Super Tourers, it is what made me want to get into BTCC. My first-year racing in BTCC was 2002, so just missed the Super Touring era, and I am really excited to drive the Vectra. I’ve driven cars from the period prior to Super Touring, like the E30 BMW, and cars from 2002 onwards, but not in between, so looking forward to the experience.”
Hughes added: “I’m delighted to have Colin onboard with the team at Super Touring Power 3. I will be driving the MG on Saturday, and swapping with Colin to race the Vectra on Sunday. We’re really excited to see Colin in a Super Tourer for the first time, and then reunited with his MG on Sunday.”
