Matthew Wrigley claimed pole position in the Masters Racing Legends series for retro F1 machinery on the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit this afternoon (Saturday). At the wheel of his Tyrrell 011, the British driver edged out Japanese racer Yutaka Toriba by just 0.047s to claim the top spot in the sunshine.
Wrigley completed just six laps of the famous Kent circuit in beautiful weather, and it was on the fifth of these that he set a time of 1m21.373s that was to be the session benchmark. Toriba completed almost double the amount of running in his Williams FW07C but had to settle for second by a narrow margin ahead of tomorrow's two races.
Jordan Grogor and Simon Fish followed in the order in third and fourth, during what turned out to be a strong session for cars bearing the Arrows name. Grogor's A3 and Fish's A4 both lapped within eight tenths of the leading pace, just 0.083s apart from each other to set up another close battle ahead of Sunday's double-header.
Established historic F1 racer Steve Hartley completed the top-five in his sublime McLaren MP4/1, ahead of Mark Harrison (Shadow DN9), Warren Briggs (McLaren M29), Peter Williams (LEC CRP1) and Mark Hazell (Williams FW08C). The top-10 was completed by Masters Historic Racing Founder and President Ron Maydon, at the wheel of a second LEC, as raced in period by David Purley.
