Newly crowned Kwik Fit British Touring Car Champion Ash Sutton celebrated his fourth series title with another sublime victory, his 12th of the season, on the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit this afternoon (Sunday).
On a bright and sunny day at the Kent circuit, Sutton picked up where he left off with victory in race one by leading from lights to flag in the second contest of the day. The NAPA Racing UK Ford was never headed after taking the lead into Paddock Hill Bend.
The main competition once again came from 2022 title winner Tom Ingram in the first of the EXCELR8 prepared Hyundais, who held second at the start. The duel was halted early on however after Ronan Pearson and Michael Crees were caught up in an incident on the approach to Graham Hill Bend as Colin Turkington’s BMW slowed on the exit of Druids.
The race resumed on lap five with the distance extended to 18 laps for the second time today, and Sutton once again controlled things as full speed running got underway again. Sutton had one more safety car period to contend with following contact between Sam Osborne and James Gornall which saw the former end up in the Paddock Hill Bend gravel trap.
The laps wound down behind the safety car but the stricken car was retrieved in time for one more racing lap. Sutton made no mistake though as the race got going once more on the final lap, to cross the line first.
Behind Ingram in second, Dan Cammish in the second of the NAPA Racing UK Fords came out on top of a lively fight for third. Bobby Thompson held the position early on, but Cammish claimed his place on the rostrum with a bold move at Druids as the race fired up after the first safety car on lap five.
Ricky Collard also passed Thompson to take fourth, with the Team HARD Cupra which finished third in race one eventually rounding out the top-five. Jake Hill was the best performing of the West Surrey Racing run BMWs in sixth, ahead of this year’s Independent champion Josh Cook. Daniel Rowbottom, Stephen Jelley and Daniel Lloyd completed the top-ten.
One more BTCC race is due this afternoon and is scheduled to get going around 5.25pm.
