British Truck Racing: Smith wins on Saturday ahead of Sunday sell-out crowd

Multiple reigning British Truck Racing Champion Ryan Smith claimed yet another victory at Brands Hatch this afternoon (Saturday), crossing the finish line first in what turned out to be the series’ only completed contest of the day.

Two British Truck Racing Championship (BTRC) contests had been scheduled on the Indy circuit, but the first was declared without a result after two red flag stoppages. Crucially, one of these involved title contender Stuart Oliver, who was consequently unable to start the later race.

Race two was interrupted too following a trip into the gravel for Adam Bint, who led the Division 2 standings into the weekend, but the race was able to resume for 10 minutes to ensure a result.

Tom O’Rourke led the Division 1 early on from David Jenkins, Smith’s main title challenger with Oliver a non-starter, but the championship leader produced a stellar charge through the pack. Smith’s striking Daimler Freightliner cut through from fifth on the grid, passing John Bowler and Michael Oliver early on to set up a chase to those ahead.

Despite having a little bit of a gap by the time Smith climbed to third, there was little Jenkins or O’Rourke could do to hold back their rival as he surged through to take the lead and they settled for second and third respectively.

In Division 2 it was Paul Rivett who claimed class honours, making the most of his title rival Bint’s early misfortune to take the win. Despite his earlier spin, Bint was able to recover to second on the road in the class with John Powell rounding out the Division 2 top three.
